[VIDEO] Interview with Australian music and TV legend, Don Spencer OAM, CEO of Australian Children’s Music Foundation

In September this year, Future Generation Investment Fund (FGX) was launched, which is a no-fee listed investment company that donates a percentage of its net asset value each year to charity, with a focus on children at risk. Rivkin spread the word about this charitable investment vehicle to its clients and quickly began gathering applications from investors keen to access great value and help children at the same time. CMC Markets Stockbroking, Rivkin’s broking partner, kindly and generously agreed to forward all stamping fees associated with the placement directly to Rivkin, of which 100% have been donated to charities associated with children at risk.

Today I interviewed an Australian legend of music and television, and someone who helped entertain many children – including me – who grew up throughout the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s during his role on the TV show Play School.

Don Spencer is the founder and CEO of the Australian Children’s Music Foundation (ACMF), which he started in 2002, using music as a means to reach out to disadvantaged children to bring joy and interaction into their lives. Don and his team’s subtle art of approaching children and boosting their self-confidence through a musical education is a means to building social skills that might otherwise seem unfathomable to these kids, as he describes in one of his stories.

Prior to kicking off the interview, after Don had explained that his paid teachers are generally recruited from the music industry rather than the music teaching industry, I quipped, “A friend of mine tweeted a classic line the other day – the definition of a musician: someone who packs $5,000 worth of equipment into a $500 car to drive 100 miles to get paid $50 for a gig.” And then he gave his take of “how to make $1,000,000 in the stock market, start with $5,000,000 and work down from there.” Touché!

If you enjoyed Don’s interview and you’d like to get involved, here are some ways to do so:

  • Donate to the ACMF by visiting http://acmf.com.au/about/about-acmf/ and clicking on the ‘Make a donation’ button on the left hand side
  • Contact the ACMF by emailing contact@acmf.com.auDon points out that they require: venue hire for events; office space to conduct business; donations of musical instruments for the schools; and help raising awareness by talking about the ACMF and their wonderful work to friends, family and colleagues.
